Testimonials

I found YLC very useful and interesting. It was a good addition to the main TESOL course. It was very important to see different approaches to teaching adults and children. And although many techniques were in common, the ways of presenting them to students were absolutely different. The course showed the importance of discipline with YL and a teacher being an actor/ an actress, i.e. entertain kids while teaching! I would recommend this course to all OxfordTEFL trainees as it will make you more confident in your teaching abilities. Moreover, you will meet very professional teachers, who will not only teach you some theoretical things, but involve you in a number of practical activities. It was so great to feel like a 6 year old student who needs to make a paper-bag puppet or to sing a song….

Why an extension course?

English Language Teaching is very diverse. Whilst the CertTESOL gives some introductory input on Teaching Young Learners, the extension course is designed to more fully equip you for the specific challenges faced by teaching pre-school in Prague, summer camp in Seoul or primary classes in Peking.

The extension course can widen your job prospects and, equally importantly, give you extra confidence in dealing with specific challenges such as those described above which are not dealt with in detail on the CertTESOL course. So for those who already know they wish to teach Young Learners or for those who are likely to travel to destinations such as the Far East, where there is a huge demand for this teaching, this course is a valuable addition to your initial training.

Course Description

The workshops cover areas that newly qualified teachers typically need most support with. They focus on planning and classroom management issues. They are highly practical and include opportunities to create materials and to peer teach.

You will leave the course with practical ideas on how to approach Young Learner classes as well as materials and ideas for specific activities.

The following areas are covered:

- Classroom management and discipline

- Self-esteem and motivation

- Use of Mother Tongue

- Coursebooks, Materials and Resources

- Music, video, DVD, internet and multi-media

- Games

- Arts and crafts

- Project work

- Drama, role-play and story telling

- Professional support and development

- Hands on experience in a Prague school dedicated to young learners

Certificates and Assessment

Participants will receive an OxfordTEFL Certificate in Young Learners, provided they attend the 20 course hours. The certificate will include an outline of course content. We will provide further references to employers as required.

Dates for 2008

The dates of the courses are planned to coincide with the end of a CertTESOL course so you can simply do the CertTSEOL and then continue for the extra 3 days and pick up the Young Learners Certificate.
